My Chalet Holiday

When I discovered that the Austrian setting of the Chalet School books was based on a real location, the village of Pertisau on the banks of the Achensee (called Briesau on the Tiernsee in the books), I became determined to visit, and did so in 2001.

I reached the Achensee in the same way as the girls in the books, on the little train that climbs its way up the mountains, and then went on a cruise on the lake. I saw the "dripping rock", the Alpenhof which stands on the site that the school occupies in the books, and the Furstenhaus Hotel, called the Kron Prinz Karl hotel in the books. I also saw the plaque commemorating Elinor Brent-Dyer at the library.

I also visited many other places mentioned in the books, such as Innsbruck and the Stubai Glacier.
