George Roberts and Emily Godwin were married on 5 August 1874 at York Road Chapel, Lambeth. They had the following children:

 

1. JAMES CHARLES GODWIN ROBERTS was born November 7, 1875 in Bermondsey, London, and died before 1931. He married JANE ANNIE PULSFORD. They had two daughters, WINIFRED ANNIE ROBERTS (Winnie) born December 14, 1899, and died 1974 in London, and DOLLY ROBERTS, b. May 5, 1902.

Winnie married WALTER SAYERS June 14, 1919 in London, and they had the following children:
RHODA ANNIE SAYERS, b. April 14, 1920, Kensington, London.
WILLIAM JAMES SAYERS (Uggy), b. May 14, 1921, Kensington, London; d. April 19, 1985, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.
WALTER SAYERS, b. March 18, 1923, Kensington, London.
LILIAN KATE RUBY SAYERS, b. November 29, 1930, Kensington, London. 

 

2. WALTER G ROBERTS was born September 5, 1880 in Rotherhithe, London, and died before 1931. His wife's name was IVY and they had a daughter IRIS ROBERTS.

 

3. HENRY ROBERT ROBERTS (Harry) was born July 8, 1882 in 10 Plough Road, Rotherhithe, London, and died June 7, 1917 in 198-200 Westminster Br Rd, London. He married MARY NICHOLSON STEWART April 27, 1911 in Lambeth, London, daughter of CHARLES STEWART and ELIZABETH DOWNIE. They had the following children:

GEORGE ROBERTS, b. March 29, 1912, London; d. March 3, 2002, Dundee.
HENRY ROBERTS, b. April 24, 1913, London.
LILIAN EMILY ROBERTS, b. October 10, 1914, 198-200 Westminster Br Rd; d. June 11, 1995, Dunfermline, Fife.
VERA ROBERTS, b. February 13, 1916, London.

  

4. MARY ANN EMILY ROBERTS (May) was born February 7, 1884 in Rotherhithe, London, and died about 1960. She married ARTHUR GEORGE MAYES in June 1910. They had a daughter ILEAN VIOLET PATRICIA MAYES (Patty), b. June 30, 1911. Patty died as a young woman in March 1942 in Worthing when she mistook a restaurant cellar for a toilet during a blackout and fell down the stairs.

 

5. ROBERT EDWARD ROBERTS (Bob) b. May 29, 1886, Rotherhithe, London; He married a woman named AIDA. They had no children. For a while they were chauffeur and cook at a house in Ewhurst, Surrey, before emigrating to Johannesburg in South Africa. Aida died and Bob remarried, but again there were no children. He died after 1950.

 

6. LILIAN MAUD ROBERTS was born November 12, 1888 in Rotherhithe, London, and died October 11, 1974 in Orpington Hospital, Bromley, Kent. She married CECIL ERNEST WOODLEY September 20, 1911 in St Catherine's Church, Hatcham, London. They had three daughters:

JOAN LILLIAN WOODLEY, b. March 10, 1917, 23 Jerningham Road, New Cross, London.
NORA VALERIE WOODLEY, b. June 21, 1920, Garlies Road, Forest Hill, London.
MARGARET CECILE WOODLEY, b. July 4, 1922, 246 Stansted Road, Forest Hill, London. 

 

7. GEORGE ALBERT VICTOR ROBERTS, b. August 4, 1890, Rotherhithe, London. Lance Corporal 510692 1st/14th Bn London Regt (London Scottish). Killed on 1 July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France (Pier and Face 9C and 13C), and at the family plot at Brookwood Cemetery.

 

 

8. WILLIAM FREDERICK ROBERTS (Bill) was born August 29, 1891 in New Cross, London, and died October 15, 1940 in 178 Lambeth Road, Lambeth, London. He married GLADYS LILIAN. William was a licensed victualler. He and Gladys ran the Union Flag public house on Lambeth Road. William's ashes were interred in the family plot at Brookwood Cemetery.

William and Gladys had a daughter IRENE ROBERTS (Reenie). She became an actress and used the name Renee Roberts. She appeared in the famous television situation comedy series “Fawlty Towers” as Miss Gatsby.

George Roberts died 29 July 1921 at Hereward Boarding Establishment, 26 Gordon Road, Cliftonville, Margate, Kent, leaving almost £2000 to his wife. He is buried in the family plot at Brookwood Cemetery.

After George's death, his wife Emily lived with her daughter and son-in-law Lilian Maud and Cecil Ernest Woodley. She died on 1 November 1933 at 103 Jerningham Road, New Cross. She is also buried at Brookwood. She left about £1000 to her surviving children.
