A-Z of Jupiter Moon

 

Some of these terms are specific to Jupiter Moon, and some are general scientific terms.

 

Acceleration Stations

When the Ilea accelerates an alarm is sounded and it is necessary for all personnel to strap themselves in.

 

Achilles

A group of asteroids just outside the Jupiter System. Also the name of the ship on the Michaelangelo Expedition.

 

Achilles G33

Fourth largest asteroid of the Manilla group. Eventually given the name Gabriella 33, after the first woman to set foot there.

 

Achilles Shield

Software containing the navigation logs for the Michaelangelo Expedition.

 

Amalthea

Irregularly shaped, red moon of Jupiter.

 

Annabell’s

Nightclub in Space City, Callisto.

 

Ariel 9

Planet in the Parkinson’s Star system which may be life supporting.

 

Autofax

One-way text communication sent using an autosec.

 

Autosec

A hand-held communication device.

 

Bonaventure

The Elizabeth Bonaventure was the ship used for the first Mars mission in 2016. Petra was the ship’s computer. The only remaining Orion class fusion engine ship. The Bonaventure was joined with the Naiad in 2034 to form the Ilea.

 

Callisto

Icy, cratered moon of Jupiter where liquid hydrogen is manufactured.

 

Carena Corporation

Multinational corporation which has the licence to develop liquid hydrogen production in the Jupiter system.

 

Centaur

The larger type of shuttle. Has a capacity of at least 30 people.

 

Ceres

The largest of the asteroids between Mars and Jupiter. The US base Island Five is located here.

 

Club Galileo

Bar on board the Ilea.

 

CO2 extractor

Recycles the air on the Ilea every 6 hours.

 

Columbus College

Christopher Columbus College, part of the University of Space, is located on the space station Ilea. About 60 people are on board including students from throughout Europe.

 

Comcen

Command centre of the Ilea, located on Gantry 1.

 

Comcen Gantry

Area of the Ilea in which Comcen is located (Gantry 1).

 

Common Room

Where the occupants of the Ilea eat their meals. Located on Gantry 4.

 

Comsat 4

Communications satellite providing a microwave link between Callisto and Io.

Communications satellite

 

Copernicus

The ship which was mining Helium 3 for the Daedalus Project. A Melbourne class interorbital cruiser as sophisticated as the Valencia. It cost one billion ECUs to build. After only 2 months in service it went down without trace in adverse weather conditions whilst on a routine mission. The five man crew was lost, presumed dead: Henry Carson, Peter Craig, Howard Frobisher, John Frederick Henderson and Michael Nation. The inquest recorded verdicts of death by misadventure. The ship was later found near Amalthea, with one surviving crewmember: Henry Carson.

 

Cranfield College

Where most Space Commission personnel are trained.

 

Daedalus 10

A 12 year mission to Parkinson’s Star involving 400 people which Professor Brelan has been planning for 15 years. It receives funding from government agencies and multinational companies including arms companies. It will be the first expedition to another star. There is a research base at Valhalla on Callisto, where personnel are trained for Daedalus. The research labs and headquarters are located in Valhalla. The starship is being built in the Jupiter system. It was intended to use 420 tonnes of molybdenum from Leda to line the eight thrust chambers.

 

Dione

One of Saturn’s moons.

 

The Dome

A greenhouse type structure at the centre of the Ilea. Plants are grown here for consumption. Exercise equipment is also located here. Radiation shields occasionally block off the windows in high radiation conditions.

 

Dunkirk

Liner travelling from Jupiter system to Island Five and Moonstation.

 

Earth Call

One-way voice communication to/from Earth.

Area of the Ilea where Comcen is located, also called Comcen Gantry.

 

Gantry 2

Area of the Ilea where staff accommodation is located.

Area of the Ilea where student accommodation is located. The Common Room and Medicom are also located here.

 

Ganymede

Icy, cratered moon of Jupiter

 

GFP

Genetic fingerprint. Used by Medicom as a comparison to determine whether someone has a virus and to produce an antibody.

 

Himalia/Hymalia

One of Jupiter’s moons. An astrophysics research team works here.

 

The Hostel

A transit hostel in Space City for miners.

 

The Hub

Lifts run from here to the other areas of the Ilea.

 

Ilea

An Oberon class fusion engine ship which houses Christopher Columbus College and the administration offices of the Daedalus Project. Usually in orbit around Jupiter’s moon Callisto, orbiting every 5 hours. The Ilea was formed when the Naiad and the Elizabeth Bonaventure were joined together in 2034. About 60 people are on board, the majority of whom are students from throughout Europe (about half are from Britain and the rest are mainly from France and Germany). Its main power source is solar cells, with a nuclear reactor as backup.

 

Interorbital

A ship which travels between planets.

 

Interworld

Chemical plant on Io carrying out experiments with propellents.

 

Io

Red, sulpurous, volcanic moon of Jupiter where the Interworld Chemical Plant is located.

 

Io flux tube

Area of extremely high voltage and current connecting Io and Jupiter.

 

Island Five

A US base on the asteroid Ceres. Location of the American University, the American Hospital, the Pleasure Dome and Runnymede college.

 

Island One

In orbit around Earth/on Ganymede?.

 

Island Two

In orbit around Earth.

 

Javelin Mission

It aimed to go one light year towards the nearest star. The crew ended up going mad 4 months into the journey.

 

Leda

One of Jupiter’s moons. Professor Brelan planned to get molybdenum for the Daedalus mission here.

 

Luna

Earth’s moon.

 

Marinaris

Liner which travels between the Jupiter system and Mars.

 

Mars Missions

The first Mars mission took place in 2016. The ship was the Bonaventure. Four living modules were placed in Mariner Valley and the crew were to do 2 months reconnaisance using old moon buggies. They were struck by a space virus after about 3 weeks and the ship’s computer Petra had to bring the ship back unaided. Eliot was on the third Mars mission when contact with alien life may have been made.

 

Mars Station

Has a golf course?, Japanese leisure centre

 

Medicom

Medical computer used to diagnose illnesses and recommend treatment. Also refers to the medical centre on Gantry 4.

 

Mekon

The old name for the Stardust Café, before Lil came back from Island Five.

 

Michaelangelo

Expedition to the Achilles group of asteroids just outside the Jupiter System, 25-28 June 2037. The ship was called the Achilles. Captain Vincent Cordweller believed that his first officer, Samantha Weaver, had become psychotic and he set up a computer program which murdered her by luring her into the hangar bay and opening the doors. The other crewmembers were Salvatore, and Tankara, a Korean engineer who was later on the team investigating the events on the Michaelangelo Expedition.

 

Minos

The smaller, more manoevreable type of shuttle.

Main settlement on the Moon. Located in the Sea of Tranquillity?

Moonshine gin

Eliot and Daniel’s favourite drink.

 

Naiad

Ship built at Moonstation in 2020. It was joined with the Bonaventure in 2034 to form the Ilea. The man who built the first Dome on Callisto arrived on the Naiad.

 

The Oort Cloud

Dutch astronomer J H Oort suggested that comets may be formed by perturbation of this cloud of bodies about a light year from the sun. Drummond’s area of interest.

 

Parkinson’s Star

Destination of the Daedalus project. A signal was detected from the area in 2032, which could possibly mean there is intelligent life there.

 

Pasiphaë

One of Jupiter’s outermost moons, on which is situated a deep space observatory.

 

Petra

The Ilea’s computer. Initially used for the first Mars mission on the Bonaventure.

 

Plasmoids

High voltage discharges.

 

Red Spot Radio

Callisto’s radio station.

 

Rescue Ball

Used to transport injured people in space.

 

Ruby Kumara

DJ on Red Spot Radio. An entertainment software package created by Sabine Galland and used by Carena.

 

Runymede College

On Ceres. Part of the University of Space?

 

Sam files

Files regarding the first Mars mission which were found in Petra. Named after the captain.

 

Santa Maria

A Cabrel class cruiser. Supposedly from the University of Salvador 2050 Astrophysics Study Venture.

 

ScanLab

Scandinavian research lab in Mariner Valley, Mars.

 

Simpson Base

In Valhalla, Callisto.

 

Space City

The main settlement on Callisto.

Space Viruses

Extremely deadly. In the Mars epidemic 40 survived out of 200. It caused calcium deficiency which lead to degeneration of bones and teeth. MV14 is the Mars 14 virus.

 

Space Weddings

Couples marrying in space receive a special certificate from Brides magazine. A ship’s captain can marry a couple in an emergency.

 

Stardust Café

Bar in Space City owned by Lili. Employees include Zinzi. Previously known as the Mekon.

 

Star of Saigon

Ship on which Melody, Tim and their parents travelled from Earth to Callisto. Now it travels back and forth between the Jupiter system and Ceres.

 

Valencia

Interorbital ship which travels between Earth and the Jupiter system, a nine month journey.

 

Valhalla

Huge ringed basin on Callisto, where Simpson Base and the Daedalus research labs are located. Another similar area is named Asgard.

 

Van Allen Belts

Used here to refer to the Jovian radiation belts in which ions are trapped by the magnetic field. These are 10 000 times more intense than Earth’s Van Allen belts.

 

Vitachoc

A brand of chocolate bar. Flavours include Pacific Orange. Other confectionery available includes Vitamint, Eskimo Bar and Space Babies?

 

Zero Chamber

Zero gravity chamber on board the Ilea.

 

Zeus 2

The second Jupiter mission. Took place in 2032.
